Third Culture Kids, 2nd Edition
The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds
by David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken

Paperback, 360 pp.
Price: £12.99
ISBN: 9781857885255

Completely revised and updated edition of the 100,000 copy bestseller.

Nearly a decade ago, Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds introduced the concept of and has been the authority on the experiences of “TCKs”—Sociologist and author David Pollock describes a TCK as "a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK's life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of a similar background.”

Filled with real-life anecdotes, Third Culture Kids examines the nature of the TCK experience and its effect on maturing, developing a sense of identity and adjusting to one’s “passport country” upon return. For many third culture kids, this book will be their first opportunity to discover that they share a common heritage with countless others around the world.

This expanded edition profiles the personal challenges that TCKs experience, from feelings of rootlessness and unresolved grief to struggles with maturity and identity. Highlighting dramatic changes brought about by instant communication and new mobility patterns, the new edition shows how the TCK experience is becoming increasingly common and valuable. The authors also expand the coverage to include “cross-cultural kids,” children of bi-racial or bi-cultural parents, immigrants and international adoptees—all of this bringing hidden diversity to our world and challenging our old notions of identity and “home”.

"This is a book I have been waiting for for so long. I found myself exclaiming at the turn of every page, especially impressed with the way you map both the bold clear lines of the general experience and all the many shades that give the individual experience depth and particularity…. Absolutely brilliant...will quickly become the most sought-after book in the international expatriate community."
—Barbara Schaetti, Transition Dynamics

"Pollock and Van Reken have done a compelling job…. [They] present a balanced perspective of the benefits as well as the challenges inherent in being raised as a TCK."
—Paul E. Nelson, President/CEO, Mission Training International

Ruth E. Van Reken, herself an adult TCK and a parent and grandparent of TCKs, is author of one of the first books written about the TCK experience, Letters Never Sent. David C. Pollock worked with TCKs and adult TCKs for more than twenty years and logged thousands of miles conducting seminars and conferences for TCKs, their parents, and sponsoring organizations.
