Bilingual by Choice
Raising Kids in Two (Or More!) Languages
by Virginie Raguenaud

Paperback, 190 pp.
Price: £12.99
ISBN: 9781857885262

"Bravo, Virginie, for showing us the way to helping our children retain their language heritage as they grow."
Joshua A Fishman, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Yeshiva University and Stanford University

"Not only does she dispel common anxiety-producing myths, but she also gives clear, practical ways for how parents can help their children develop fluency in each heritage language."
Ruth E Van Reken, co-author Third Culture Kids and co-founder Families in Global Transition conference

Research has shown that children fluent in two languages have certain cognitive advantages compared to those who speak only one. They are better at problem solving, demonstrate greater creativity, and express more tolerant attitudes toward others." Ref: The Literary Trust

In Bilingual By Choice, Virginie Raguenaud guides parents on how to introduce a second language to their children. The book deals directly with the obstacles to sustaining a second language, including unsupportive relatives, lack of resources, issues at school, frequent relocations, special needs and discrimination, countering each one with the author's first-hand experience with both sides of the growing up bilingual journey, as a child and as a parent.

Full of practical strategies and techniques for any family or instructor to ensure that children stay engaged and active in every language available to them, the book employs specific activities and games to show families not only how to teach their children more than one language, but also help them retain and develop those skills, both in and outside of the home, as they grow.

Global nomad and bilingual writer Virginie Raguenaud is a mother of French- and English-speaking twins. She is currently studying for a degree in Intercultural Relations. She is a member of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), Families in Global Transition (FIGT), and the Society of Intercultural Education, Training, and Research (SIETAR USA).
